To think that anyone would manage to defeat all the members of the elite four is almost scary. Not because of the difficulty of that task, mind, but just the persistence and commitment it takes. They must really care about whatever it is that challenging Kyle could grant them. Fame? Power? Wealth?

Inside the champion's chamber, only Katherine waits. There isn't an actual challenger, obviously, Kat just asked the receptionist to announce that to mess with Kyle.

kyle's first thought upon hearing the news was to see if the challenger was someone he can feasibly give up the seat to and see no problems following after.

katherine's presence raises a brow, but the mere presence of smeargle clears some of the air. she uses it, but not on actual combat such as a champion title challenge like he does.

he blinks.

"so, uh, i'm guessing you want to trade moves?"

why else would she appear in front of him with a smeargle? reading between the lines was easy once he gets to know the other person, which katherine somehow does easily.

he wonders if the reason why he can find himself getting along with a person that blew him up once before was because she doesn't make herself hard to read.

"Yes," she answers flatly, not very surprised by the fact that it barely took Kyle any time to recognize what they were here for. She'd gotten used to the champion's lucky estimates. She wouldn't call them guesses, though.

"I heard you were the one to start this whole trend," her eyes rest upon her Smeargle when she says that, judging it for all of its joy and glee. What a strange species.

he grumbles, but he has no reason to complain.

"not my fault people slept on a dog pokemon before they realized they can get something shiny out if it."

the next best thing to acquiring a legendary was getting a fraction of their power. if there's one thing he knew people on hoenn want, it's that. hiding it under any other reason was going to be difficult to believe.

katherine was the same, but she wasn't the type to hide her intentions anyways so the fun out of teasing her out of it wasn't going to happen.

"this is a trade, alright?" he asks as he takes out his phone, wherein he takes his pokedex app out to display his pokemon's moves before showing it to her. "you can pick one, i guess."

on one hand, he doesn't fully trust that it won't backfire on him in the future. on the other hand, it's his subtle way of supporting how she brings hell on people who deserves it, both in the battlefield and off.

a lot of people want to do what she does but are afraid of consequences, kyle being one of thsoe.

Her eyes flutter quickly, unsure of what they've just read. Most moves were familiar to her. Some more than others, sure, but only one really piqued her curiosity.

Katherine's own phone is retrieved to utilize the same application to share her Smeargle's moves with Kyle. Aside from normal pokemon moves, only two other moves were particularly special. The first, one that Kyle's own Smeargle knew, Roar of Time. The second being LUNAR DANCE.

it's only when she mentions the move that she wants that it all clicks. he supposed he shouldn't have been surprised.

"...you read my own account on the trip to the cloud, didn't you?"

dialga and palkia stuff was in the same vein as giratina, so of course she would be interested.

kyle sighs as he gets his smeargle to walk to a corner of the room with the least expensive decor for it to slash the air with spatial rend. the scar on the space in front of it looked surreal with how distorted it has become.

"as long as you don't give this away to just about anyone," he tells her. he doubts she would though, given her lack of extensive friend network. "anyways, what does your move do?"

It sounds just as dry as it reads. "So what if I did? You can't blame me. You've probably had a Smeargle longer than anyone else I know, and you're also..." Himself. "The Champion. It was only fair to assume I'd find something rare," Katherine adds before her shoulders roll backwards into a shrug.

The sight of the distorted rip in space causes her eyes to narrow some whilst her Smeargle SKETCHES the move and performs it as well.

"Come on, you should know I wouldn't trade it to anyone for anything less valuable."

"It's like, the most potent healing move I can think of. It does everything you'd expect-- but it also causes the user to faint, so there's that. It's highly situational, but like... You know."

her logic was fair.

the move she was about to allow him to sketch, however, didn't sound like it was.

"is there a point when my legend is the personification of the ultimate healing spell of every video game?" he groans. despite that, he doesn't complain.

"i guess i'll take it," he mumbles. "i suppose it'll fill a niche eventually."

maybe not right now, but eventually.

as he waits for katherine's smeargle to perform the move, a thought comes to mind.

"hey, do you think this wakes up fainted pokemon? like, once your smeargle faints from using it, i can use my smeargle to get him back?"

Sure, he was the only known man in the Hoenn region to own a Pokemon with the ability to disable Avatar Powers, but what if someone was to replicate that effect? Kyle might need some healing then..! As unlikely as it sounds, it was possible.

"Erm, I dunno, actually. You can test it though, if you want."

With a brief nod, her Smeargle is instructed to finally perform the move. It twirls in place while holding its tail, painting the move as it brings its LUNAR DANCE to life. The effects are as described, of course, and it does faint when it reaches its course. Kyle's own Smeargle is probably feeling a tad bit healthier than before.

his smeargle sketches the move as katherine's just faints from performing it.

he wasn't going to lie and say that it wasn't disappointing. katherine manages to encapsulate what he wanted to say, even with all the filters that wouldn't make it sound so bad without making it sound too good.

"maybe it needs a moon," he agrees. "it is called lunar dance after all."

his eyes look at his smeargle, and then motions for his pokemon to copy the other one. it doesn't seem scared to just fall on the ground and faint though, probably because it isn't in a dangerous situation.

the same thing happens. his smeargle also flops to the ground.

there is silence from kyle.
